Fourplay: Four artists that should be on your radar, calendar, and CD player [excerpt]

Shwa Losben, Music Editor, On Tap Magazine

Anybody who calls herself by her first name only has to be extremely talented or extremely egotistical. Lianna is anything but the latter. Since releasing her debut CD "Walk in My Shoes" in 1998, the North Carolina native has played hundreds of shows, along the way sharing the stage with acts including Hootie and the Blowfish, Shawn Mullins, and the Indigo Girls. After just a year here, the former lawyer has already performed at major festivals including the annual Taste of DC and larger club venues including Jammin Java in Vienna. Backed by Dave Mehring on bass, Seth Brown on drums, and Arch Alcantara on lead guitar, Lianna's catchy, acoustic-driven brand of rock begs a Sheryl Crow comparison. With a flood of gimmicks in the industry today, Lianna hopes her music stands on its own. "I don't think musicians should be playing the sex card or dropping F-bombs," Lianna said. "You never walk away from a show saying, 'Man, they sucked. I wish they would have cussed more.'" When she's not performing, Lianna works as a fundraiser for a non-profit that helps inner-city kids. She also helps lead a church band. Even with the extra activities, music isn't taking a back seat. "I only sleep four or five hours a night," Lianna said. "But a little sleep deprivation is ok."
